Calkins is sorry she didn't get to speak with Edwin at the meetins at Carniege. She friend Katherine Crawford was ill. She will be leaving for Washington and Atlanta. Miss Ware's and Calkin's are neighbors. She wanted to discuss the meeting and helping other artists and gifted need help. She refers to Mrs. Heowe.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
